Fountain Hill Cemetery is a serene, park-like landscape sculpted with rolling hills and lush greenery. Our history is heavily rooted in the Deep River community, and we are honored to continue to provide caring and professional services to our families for many more years to come.
History of
Fountain Hill Cemetery
In 1851, 26 leading citizens of the village of Deep River, (town of Saybrook) met at the store formally occupied by Baruck Beckwith (168 Main St) to discuss where to bury the dead. The concern stemmed from a need to have a larger area set aside for burials than the current small burial grounds in the village. It seemed expedient to form an association to purchase land and devise a means of executing plans of operations.
The Wooster Chapel
Miss Mary McCellan Wooster, the last of the descendants of the family of Henry Wooster (original stockholder), left a bequest of $10,000 to be used for the erection of a chapel on the grounds of Fountain Hill Cemetery. The Chapel is located to the left of the pillared main entrance, on a gently sloping elevation and gives the impression of being part of the natural ledge upon which it is built. The building is of Gothic architecture and is 50 feet in length and 30 feet in width.
